Affordable Veterinary Care for Everyone
Our comment from InfoVet about Great South Vets:
Great South Vets is a veterinary clinic in New Zealand known for its affordable services and dedicated staff. Many customers appreciate the reasonable pricing for consultations and treatments, making it a go-to for pet owners looking to keep costs down. Reviews highlight the caring and compassionate vets, particularly Dr. Run Xiao and Dr. Santina, who have been praised for their thoroughness and ability to communicate effectively with pet owners.
Clients frequently mention their positive experiences with quick and efficient services, particularly during urgent visits. The walk-in system allows for accessibility, though some users have noted the need to arrive early to avoid long wait times. Despite complaints regarding communication issues, particularly phone responsiveness, many still recommend Great South Vets for its affordable pricing and genuine care.
However, it is important for potential clients to be aware of long wait times and occasional lapses in communication, especially during busy hours. Some customers have reported instances of rushed appointments or inadequate aftercare, suggesting a need for improved management and staffing.
Overall, Great South Vets provides a valuable service to the community, focusing on affordable and compassionate veterinary care for pets.

Great South Vets: Reviews
Negative experience: I honestly don’t even know what to say about Great South Vets. I’ve called so many times and no one ever answers the phone. It’s just constant ringing with no response. When you’re trying to sort something out for your pet, that’s the last thing you need. After reading other reviews and now experiencing this myself, it kind of feels like a sign not to bother. If I can’t even get through on the phone, it doesn’t exactly give me confidence about anything else. Probably a blessing in disguise to look elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: Great place to know about when you need urgent vet attenttion. I arrived at 7.30am and was the 5th in line but it still only took half hr and was a LOT less than I'd expected. They also dispensed the eye drops needed, and did her vaccines. Quick, affordable, will visit again.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Run Xiao is an outstanding vet who has taken care of our dogs with incredible patience and professionalism. She has seen our dog Turbo multiple times for ongoing skin issues and was always very thorough, patient, and clear in her explanations, which made us feel truly reassured every time. What we really appreciate is that she never prescribed unnecessary medications and always took a thoughtful, conservative approach, which is very different from our experiences at other clinics. Dr. Run Xiao also performed spay surgery and dental extraction for our other dog, OneOne, and everything went extremely smoothly. Her post-operative follow-up and communication were excellent, and we felt well supported throughout the recovery process. She is genuinely gentle, caring, and compassionate with animals. Highly recommend Dr. Run Xiao and the team at Great South Vets — we couldn’t ask for a better vet. The pricing at Great South Vets is also very reasonable and affordable compared to other clinics. Overall, a great experience. Highly recommend Dr. Run Xiao and the team!
Fantastic experience: Great prices, Great helpful staff!!!
Fantastic experience: Rin was our Veterinarian on the day and the team at Great South Rd Vets has been wonderful with Paige. They are caring, knowledgeable, and thorough in their care. The treatment plan with Apoquel and ear drops has really helped her, and the staff always take the time to answer my questions. I trust them completely with my pet’s health.
Negative experience: Have been very dissapointed when my 16 week old puppy needed energency help no vets were available so i had to take him to a vet hospital then the next day when needing followup antibiotics still no vet available t help im giving no stars for the no support i got from them!;
Negative experience: Heartbreaking Experience – Please Think Twice I took my dog here and it was a devastating experience. The staff seemed unprepared, receptionists were giving conflicting information, and the veterinarians appeared to be inexperienced and were unable to answer my questions. My beloved Pup died due to what I believe was a lack of proper experience and an unnecessary surgery. They claimed something was stuck inside her, despite the X-ray showing nothing. It felt like they were guessing, and it cost my best friend her life. The senior veterinarian Baird seemed disengaged, almost like he didn’t want to be there, which only added to the feeling that my dog’s care wasn’t a priority. Please, if you love your pet, don’t risk them with this clinic. Look for someone truly experienced, who knows their job, and actually cares. My experience was tragic, and reading other reviews shows I am not alone. Others have faced the same lack of competence and compassion. It’s heartbreaking to lose a pet, but losing them due to preventable mistakes is grief and guilt I should not have to carry. This clinic felt more focused on making money than actually helping.
Fantastic experience: Took my son Oreo here and they treated him good !!
Fantastic experience: Very well priced , great service, great communication and really seemed to genuinely care for our animal
Fantastic experience: Awesome service, just wish their phone number was working
Fantastic experience: Have been with vets for approximately 7 years to have my dog vaccinated. Great service but the only downfall they don't offer services after hours so had to go to Mangere bridge vets for emergency
Fantastic experience: Amazing is all I got to say
Fantastic experience: The team at Great South Vets has truly been a blessing. Although they may not have the flashiest facilities, their genuine care, compassion and kindness set them apart. Over the past 6.5 years, they have supported us in countless ways, and their dedication means so much. Most recently, I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Kaur and Shesta, who were incredibly compassionate, caring and attentive. My heartfelt thanks go out to Dr. William and his entire team—I sincerely wish them all the very best.
Positive experience: We walked in around 1pm and were told walk-ins closed at 11 though their website says 12. There were 2 staff at reception who mumbled and look like they were stunned. No smile, no comprehension and no going back there for us. The vet on East Tamaki were 10/10 and we'll continue to go there, only $10 more for a consult. Night and day service!!
Fantastic experience: best prices in auckland thank you!
Fantastic experience: Very quick treatment for my daughter's dog.
Fantastic experience: Very affordable, very good communication via email (especially when you've forgotten what they've said at the consultation) and definitely are about keeping our pets happy and healthy.
Negative experience: disappointed, brought my dog in today for a neuter and everything felt extremely rushed with no proper care/concern. We were told he was ready, but my dog could barely walk 2 steps without falling over and going in/out of sleep. We were visibly concerned and not given any reassurance. Paid extra fee for aggression although i believe if the extra care was there that wouldn’t have been necessary, as he isn’t aggressive in nature.
Fantastic experience: Lovely vet and reception staff, helpful and explained everything well. Excellent pricing.
Fantastic experience: Caring vets, easy walk in system. Easy to find on great south rd
Fantastic experience: We had our dog spayed at Great South Vets. Everything went perfectly. We received all the documents and notes, and the price was very reasonable compared to the rest of Auckland. We travelled from the North especially to this clinic because of the cost. Thank you very much!
Fantastic experience: The best vet in Auckland. Their price is super reasonable which is a blessing for Auckland pet owners. The queue is always long and you must be early.
Fantastic experience: Its super busy. They are so kind and hard working and give the most affordable pricing. No frills you get what you pay for. Its a shame that customers were rude and impatient expecting too much. I think its the best vet in Auckland. They are doing the community a service with high quality affordable prices. Best to email and they will respond when they can. Phones are constantly calling but unfortunately they have one front staff so are not always able to answer. A small price to pay for inconvinience to save 75% of what youd pay elsewhere. Website is a testament to no frills. Its like a pakn save for vet, you get good quality but the front experience is cut to provide affordable prices.
Negative experience: I was quoted $800+ medication costs from this vet for drainage of abscess on a cat. Mind you I paid $40 for consult plus $27 for antibiotics from here. I went to a different vets and was charged $250 for the same thing! INCLUDING pain relief and antibiotics within that price. $80 out of that $250 was for the consult. So the procedure plus medication only costed $170!! $800 for the same procedure is crazy and actually ridiculous. Great South Vets is entirely over priced and playing on owners emotions!
Negative experience: Rip off vet that’ll play on emotions toward ya animal knowing u want ur baby well, be sure to get quotes else where cause this place will over charge 4x the amount of other places 0/10 do not take ur animals here.
Negative experience: Disgusting service, not caring about my dog in hay fever, vomiting and bleeding from an anal gland, only because it was 11:06 and they don’t take more bookings after 11:00, not wanting to help me to find another vet, just helpless and not caring about dogs health
Negative experience: My rabbit passed away 6 days after he was desexed. I should have checked the quality of the service but was simply attracted by the unbeatable price. I could have been advised more clearly about the care of the rabbit before and after the surgery. Before the surgery, they sent me an email in general talking about dogs and cats more than rabbits which was quite misleading. One day after the desex, the rabbit got an eye problem and I didn't know it could be a sign of a serious problem. I was given some ointment and that was all, without any advice, any special care. I was relieved and believed the rabbit was OK. And now it's gone. The volunteer in the clinic helped me a lot. It was a blessing. But overall, I hope the clinic can give us more information by clearer and more direct communication.
Fantastic experience: They have done an amazing job with clipping our demon of a Pugs claws twice now under sedation. I wouldn't go anywhere else for this service.
Negative experience: I took my dog to get desexed and microchipped, not even 24 hours later after being at the vet he dies. He was barely 2 years old and he passed. We called them to see what they could do and they said they could take him for 3 days to examine on Monday when they open and ONLY IF they feel like it’s their fault then they will “compensate” us. I’d rather take the loss of our money and grieve our dog. I wouldn’t recommend coming here.
Fantastic experience: Normally have to wait 2-3 hours for an appointment yesturday was seen in 15 min only saw a nurse though but amazing for once things are getting better
Positive experience: Yea they are good there walk in plce cheapest in south auckland that ino off if u go early u will definitely gt in gud service although iwill say one of the workers there came of abit rude at first other than that iwill keep goin bk there parking limited as it's small pl but it's gud cheapest too xx
Positive experience: We took our 11 month old Labrastaff pup to get a neuter here on 25th March - it is now the 2nd of Apr and the incision is healing up amazingly, with no issues. Price was very reasonable, at over just $200 including an Elizabethen collar and 3 days worth of painkillers. Parking was a bit of a nightmare, only about 8 parking spaces, and as it's such a busy vet, I didn't get parking on dropoff. Parking was fine on pickup around 3pm. The staff weren't rude, but could have definitely been a bit friendlier. Got a good run down of post op care with a printout on how to look after our pup after the neuter. He also came out of the vet smelling quite bad, although he'd had a bath the night before. But for the price, I'd definitely give my experience here 4 stars.
Fantastic experience: The staff is exceptionally professional, friendly, empathetic, and dynamic. The veterinarians are highly qualified, explain things very well, and provides outstanding care and expertise
Negative experience: Un qualified doctors sitting, they don’t know what diagnosis dog requires instead they are asking me what you wanted to do , I said you are doctor you should diagnose what is the problem. I requested if any senior or other doctor is there , they said he is not available , don’t know why I pay them.
Fantastic experience: My pup was spayed and was well looked after while there. Staff were very helpful.
Positive experience: I was very very apprehensive to bring my dog here for her Spey reading all the reviews but i decided to go a head with it as it was within budget.I have a neutral response . Car parking is horrendous as it’s so packed , workers were okay one of them was about to inject my dog without informing me what she injecting had to stop her and ask what is was and what was its purpose. It was a sedative . To call for updates the phone was engaged I understand as the clinic is so busy once I got through the receptionist phone manner was poor needs to be worked on. Pick up I wasn’t given a run down on what to do for after care I was just handed a piece of paper to read through and given my dogs painkillers without any thorough instructions . Once again I had to ask to be informed on after care . though this place has so many bad reviews my dogs spey went well in the end eating and drinking as normal she was given painkillers and is on the mend!
Negative experience: I was unfortunately served by the owner. Please note, this man has had this practicing certificate suspended 2x for hostile and aggressive behaviour towards pets and staff. Today he was hostile, aggressive and rude towards me too and I was afraid for the safety of staff and the animals. The place stuck so bad of sick dog as well, and I could hear animals howling in distress the entire time. My cat is on heavy pain relief for dental pain while we wait for her for an appointment to remove her teeth, and I went here to get an earlier appointment. William Baird roughly checked my cat's mouth 3x and grabbed her teeth to see if he could move them with force instead of using dental xrays, and she started scratching me she was so distressed and I told him to stop. He stopped to look at me like I should shut up and carried on hurting her and acted like he needed to check her again. Then he gave me a price for removal of a full mouth of teeth despite the fact she has less than half her teeth. He also didn't do an exam on her, even when I told him to check her eye issue but I didn't press it because I realised he's abusive and has been able to get away with his behaviour for so long he doesn't care. Please avoid for your safety and your pets, and don't work here if you're a young vet or vet nurse.
Fantastic experience: Best place to have my bunnies desexed. Great price. Online booking system and notified date and times.
Positive experience: Great South Vets are consistently cheaper than any other vets for consultations, operations and medications. I'm very grateful for the walk in service also. This serves a great many animal patients and I couldn't recommend them highly enough to everyone.
Negative experience: My insurance claim denied my claim which is not their fault, but they were not at all understanding of my position financially. I owed $500, and only had half on hand, and I asked about payment options like after pay or perhaps a payment plan, but they simply told me to contact my family and ask for money off of them, or they keep my cat. The nurses hid behind the receptionist lady, who spoke very broken English, and was only a cleaner, not a vet or educated in the field whatsoever. On top of that, my information was processed by a child no older than 13.
Negative experience: Save yourself from potentially traumatising your pet and do some research on the history of the owner and only current vet and you’ll be glad you did before booking an appointment. Dr. Baird has been suspended from practice twice. Maybe he’s changed.
Positive experience: Lower price for desexing, which really counts when you have a litter of kittens. There were problems with communication and scheduling... When you realise that high numbers and low staff count enable the low pricing, you can complain or just get over it.. I guess I did both
Negative experience: would not recommend this place for anything other than vaccinations we’ve been here previously with our puppy seeing the female vet for her vacs and brought her back for a health issue this time seeing the male vet who’s also the owner after thoroughly explaining symptoms/timelines he gave a diagnosis and no further information when i questioned him because his explanation didn’t match the concerns i’d explained he didn’t even respond quite literally just sent us out the door - sure enough my puppy had the course of antibiotics is not better at all. I called the vet back to let them know i was angry and that they should check her again without us having to pay after the horrible experience we had they said they’ll check with the vet and we’ve not heard a thing back, safe to say we’re going for a second opinion elsewhere - vet visits aren’t cheap however i would happily pay top dollar and know my dogs going to get the help she needs rather than paying multiple times to go down a checklist ruling things out before actually finding the issue which seems like the process at this clinic
Negative experience: I rang the vet spoke to the nurse jotieshna if I could bring my dog for cytopint injection she checked my dogs history on the system and said yes bring the dog over for injection.Upon arrival at the vets she said I can't give injection because vet need to see the dog so we said when I rang you you said bring it over , we had to drive all the way over in traffic wasting fuel and time for not getting injection done .What makes me more angry that she was so rude didn't apologize for here mistakes very unprofessional service
Fantastic experience: Took my pet Aladdin few time really nice and great customer service.they really help with your pets.nice staff ask anything regarding your pets they do answer and help you out.keep up the good work guys.
Fantastic experience: A Lady has commented that we advertise that we have 6 Vets working at Great South Vets Papatoetoe. If you would be kind enough to screen shot the page so we can correct the mistake. I can't find it on the website. We have listed under Vets and Nurses. Two Vets and Two Vet Nurses. Please help us get our webpage up to date.
Negative experience: My cat came back after the consultation behavior changed completely on 26/09/24. Called in the next day asking for advice, as the cat seemed to be very protective and withdrawing. As I was not sure if they gave anything in the lab room. I was told to wait for a vet to call back which never happened. Had to take the poor cat to emergency afternoon next day which was Sat as he was worsening. And found out one of the take-home medications was wrong which was for DOGs with a ridiculous dosage...The vet from emergency also questioned about some of the other medications given to my cat which seemed to be way too strong for him..Made a verbal complaint, still waiting for feedback regarding the matter. If they can't give me a satisfying outcome I wouldn't mind to take this issue further up as my poor cat still quite withdrawing after 4 days since the consultation. I have been with them for few years already. Used to be excellent. But, I noticed the quality of service is declining lately. I am a health professional myself working in medical industry, luckily I didn't give the full dose to my cat these days home. I personally feel the clinic has poor communication and management. Wouldn't recommend for your loved pets. If you have to go there due to cheaper price, you should prepare yourself first, and have some insights regarding your pets' condition. Otherwise, keep always ask them what they gave to your pets and keep a record!
Fantastic experience: Thank you for castrating our wayward dog, he is like a different boy :). Staff excellent, instruction aftercare sheet brilliant, price cheap, happy dogface owners.
Negative experience: This is the most repulsive Vet appt I have ever been to! Took an hour to be seen, for most of the time we were only ones there. This was a first Health check for my new Mastiff a 3yr old I had adopted only a week ago. It was the smallest dingy room. The Vet looked at him for 5 seconds and said ok he needs antibiotics for his rash that will cost $110. HE HAD NO RASH!! And when I refused to buy the medication she continued to tell me that I shouldn't have such a big dog if I couldn’t afford it?! And I may as well have him PUT DOWN than to let him suffer. I replied I can afford but disagree with the diagnosis! This place needs to be SHUT DOWN, before fur babys are hurt in their care. Absolutely disgusting I used to be a loyal customer here many years, but the best Vets have left and so now I will be looking at moving to Ellerslie vets instead.
Fantastic experience: First time to take my cat, Ukii for a consultation. Dr. Santina performed a thorough check and treatment. Consultation fee and medicine prices are reasonable as well.
Fantastic experience: I walked in with my three dogs for a dental check and we were very fortunate that there weren't many customers. Jotishna at the reception was incredibly friendly and helpful. Santina, a young but highly professional and experienced vet, not only diagnosed one of my fur babies' teeth problems but also explained the cause. She is very efficient and knowledgeable. Both Jotishna and Santina are lovely and made this the best vet visit we've ever had. Highly recommend!
Positive experience: My mate told me they are good and cheap. I called for an appointment but I was told no appointment is required. When I went there I had to wait and then found out that there prices were the same as other vets.
Negative experience: My dog has a large, fast growing, irregular shape lump on his head. Vet quoted me over $1k for surgery, removal and everything else he needed but wouldn’t allow us to get a fine needle aspiration biopsy on the lump before proceeding. She wanted to cut it out then get a biopsy on it, when I asked to get a biopsy first said they don’t do it that way??? Even said because of his age and trachea problems he may not wake up after the operation, but still seemed eager to give me a big quote. The lady at the desk also over charged me for ear cleaner. I bought a small ear cleaner and she charged for a large. Disappointed that I’ll need to look to another vet for FNA especially as you show up waiting hours to be seen … all that for nothing
Negative experience: You should really consider twice for bringing your fur babies to this disgusting clinic, no wonder all the awesome Vets have left and happier working elsewhere. The service I have received today is beyond appalling, the receptionist/nurse has no professional knowledge or manner, call me racist if you must be her Indian accent is difficult to understand and on top of that she offered no help but being tremendously rude. Keep on hanging up the phone, and finally for for 12th times calling, she passed me into a on duty Vet, who have asked her to apologize to me because she was so rude with no manner, instead she challenged me to come into the clinic and speak to her boss. She doesn’t cares! After today, been a loyal customer for over 8 years with 2 dogs. I’m happily taking them to another vet!
Negative experience: They used to be the best in term of pricing and really good vets, except that they didn't have a booking system and it resulted in hours of waiting. Also they used to be open 7 days which was a great advantage to many other vet clinics. I arrived early on Monday morning ,before it opens and then realized there is no vet available until May 17th. My poor sick fellow was in cage for long and I went to other clinics close by hoping I can get her treatment and all needed appointment booked in advance. I'm really surprised how they operating and how poor is the management of this clinic. Why a well equipped clinic should have only one vet and when she is sick , simply there is no other doctor there. They could have disclosed on their google page ,so people would not waste their time going there. I hope the management employs more vets and the place operates as before plus having a paid in advance booking system to eliminate the risk of people not showing up.
Negative experience: This afternoon, I walked into the office and approached the reception counter where a young woman was fixing her stapler. After standing there for a few seconds, expecting her to acknowledge me, I greeted her with "good morning." She replied, "good morning," but didn't look up from her task. I inquired about my cat, but she pointed out a sign on the window indicating that the vet would not be available until May 17th, which is two weeks away . I then asked what to do with sick pets, and she bluntly replied, "Go to another clinic." Her customer service was not only unprofessional but also rude and lacking in care. That lady needs to learn customer service with a smile.
Negative experience: This used to be the best vet. They were incredibly reasonable with caring vets. They are so short-staffed now, and the one vet they have is burned out. She took a two hour lunch when I was there last, so I had to wait an extra hour to be seen. Guess I won't be going back, it's just not worth it.
Negative experience: Turned up with a cat with a bad ulcer needing to be seen ASAP to find a sign on the window saying the (only) vet is on leave for another week. God knows how long she had already been away. No notice on their website to let you know you’re wasting your time going there.
Negative experience: Phone the clinic last 4th April Thursday 24 and was told it was a walk in only and the only availible date following week I told the reception I can make next Wednesday as this is my day off. I arrived with my dog at 7am was quite dark as I was the only one there 7.15 am A Indian nurse arrived to the clinic. Two member of the public arrive to the clinic. On the window a small note ( CLOSED ) 7.30 The clinic opened the nurse came to the door. And then was told by the Indian nurse we are not running clinic our clinic is closed. As our vet is away sick and we only running booster's and checkup and will have to come back next Monday this really Pisses me off! I had made appointment at least I would have received a text or emailed not to come in. The Indian nurse showed no compassion towards me just rude She didn't even apologise unprofessional for a nurse. Note: Call the reception day before.
Negative experience: Drove 40min (can’t book an appointment) and arrived at 12:30pm only to be told they aren’t taking any more consultations for the rest of the day (their website says they are open for consultations until 4:30pm) so just wasted 1.5hrs of my time and petrol with a cat with a suspected broken leg. You need to say somewhere to call ahead or that you are shut for the rest of the day!
Positive experience: If you are looking for a good value for your friendly buddies, it's a great value to bring your pets. However, if you looking for an appointment, you need to know that you have to wait a long time or come very early in the morning. If you have emergency please, make sure to take your pet to an emergency vet hospital. Not here. I have seen one pet died because the owner of the pet had to wait for a long time for her number for appointment to come. When it was her time to see the vet, it was already too late. The owner's pet passed on her arms
Negative experience: I am usually not one to post reviews, but the service of this vet clinic was absolutely appalling. Firstly, I was there at 10am on a weekday, and it took me 5 hours to get seen. The vet that works there gave us nothing but stress, anxiety, and worries. I took my dog for a check up as his urine wasn’t normal, literally the only thing the vet did was check his heart rhythm and ask about potential symptoms he may be going through. After 5 hours, that’s all that was done, no xray, no blood test, no urine test no nothing. It is appalling how bad the service of this place is despite their “cheap” prices. I understand that their long wait times is due to only 1 vet working, but knowing the large demand of this clinic, the owners MUST step up and do something about this. There’s no proper fan, there’s barely any parking, it’s dirty in there, and even when I asked for water for my dog, I was told to use the toilet sink. Honestly, being there was a traumatising experience. Not to mention the 2 Indian nurses that work there are the worst I’ve ever seen in my life. Their choice to be a nurse is honestly questionable, as they do NOT provide values and competencies that a nurse must have (honesty, passion, patient-centred care, sympathy, guidance etc). I was quite worried about my dog being dehydrated, the waiting times, and the random pills that he was provided with, and they absolutely did not explain anything or try to comfort me. Instead, they just chewed their gum away, gave me dirty looks, and told me that they cant be of assistance. I also don’t understand why they’ve got kids working in a professional workplace. There’s a 12 year old looking child who’s at reception, who knows nothing (of course not her fault, she shouldn’t be there to begin with) and couldn’t answer my questions and there was no other staff to be seen. Honestly, please don’t take your pets here - though it may be cheap, it’s gonna scar you with stress, sweat, and anxiety for a very long time.
Fantastic experience: Took the cocker spaniel down to get his meds luckily I was number 3 in line so was in and out pretty quickly,I'm sure this must be the best value for money vet in new Zealand under 30 dollars, keep it up great south vets you've been great for our dog over the last 13 years
Fantastic experience: A stress free and prompt appointment today to vaccinate our dog for the parvo virus. Reception response to email was professional and informative. You have been our Vets for many years and we feel valued and care for our pets is outstanding. Thank you for the great work that you do, we appreciate you too.
Fantastic experience: The staff are nice and they work really hard with how busy it gets, they are by far the cheapest vet around so it does get really busy. If you wanna have a good time go really early since parking sucks during peak times.
Negative experience: DO NOT GO HERE - wish I could give it a zero. This place is by far the WORST vet I have ever been to. We did not do our research and I wish I did. We took our dog in to get fixed due to his size as we were recommended by another veterinarian. The place was busy upon arrival, office admin was rude, but we looked past that as she was busy. Got sent into another room where this man who now I know is Dr Trevor Hing came in, he didn’t introduce himself, didn’t take us through the surgery, didn’t even get to know who our dog was at all (like other vets do); asked us to hold onto our dog while he gave him the sedation and left – this made us feel extremely uneasy and uncomfortable, not to mention the old and dirty room that we were in. Once our dog was asleep the nurse and vet came in to take him away. Firstly, the vet was extremely rude to the nurse in front of us and handled our dog like a piece of meat as his leg nearly got jammed in doorway. We left feeling uneasy and came back to collect him as the procedure wasn’t going ahead which I was EXTREMELY happy about. Arrived back to find our dog having a seizure in the room on his OWN, we obviously lost it as you would... imagine finding your child having a seizure on their own and the doctors clearly not caring at all. This went on for at least 10minutes, by being told by the nurses ‘this is normal’, however, I have never experienced this with a dog coming out of sedation and we contacted our normal vet to be confirmed this is NOT normal. They also mentioned that they usually leave them in a dark crate where they wake up, if my dog woke up in this state alone then he would have clearly injured himself and been TERRIFIED. This vet is horrible, they neglect animals and clearly do not care about them at all. After talking about this with multiple people, they also have had the same experience – I wish I knew about this earlier. If you research the owner there are so many news stories about him and the way he views animals. This vet needs to be shut down, the reviews on here say it all. I am disgusted by this experience.
Negative experience: I want to express my dissatisfaction with the service provided at this facility. Despite its affordability, there are significant issues that need addressing. I brought my senior dog in for a consultation on December 3 due to excessive drooling, and the vet diagnosed a swollen gum, necessitating dental surgery. While I understand the need for the procedure, the lack of compassion and insufficient explanation of risks during the initial consultation surprised me. I scheduled the dental clean with tooth extraction and blood test for December 28. However, an hour after dropping off my dog, I received a call stating the vet lacked the proper blood test equipment, requiring a rescheduling. I rebooked for January 10, the only available date, leaving my dog in pain and swelling for an extended period. On the scheduled day, I arrived at 4 pm, only to be informed that the procedure hadn’t been done due to a surgeon’s medical emergency. The communication breakdown was attributed to them using an outdated phone number despite my updated details. The vet nurses, unhelpful and lacking compassion, repeatedly cited the surgeon’s emergency without offering a solution or showing understanding. My dog, waiting in a crate all day, suffered unnecessarily due to the staff’s negligence. The overall lack of professionalism, initiative, and care for customers and animals raises concerns about the staff’s competency and motivation—whether it’s for the love of animals or simply a job for financial gain. This experience has been mentally and emotionally taxing for both me and my dog. I cannot recommend this facility due to its lack of services, professionalism, and competency. It’s essential to research thoroughly and consider alternative veterinary options to ensure your pet receives the care they deserve.
Negative experience: booked my cat in for a desex and microchip and got rescheduled 3 different times. tried calling their phone line multiple times multiple days and has never been picked up. disappointing as the price seems good but i guess you get what you pay for . do not recommend!
Negative experience: Booked my dog in to be speyed, called to confirm her appointment after booking online, all was fine with price confirmed at $160 which was amazing! Day of appointment, we arrive at 7.30am to drop off my girl. Finally saw a vet nurse at 8.30 to check her in for her surgery, the vet nurse asked about extra sedation in case she's aggressive towards them, which is no problems except I told her well I'd really rather you didn't because she is an 8.5 yr old mastiff to which the nurse was absolutely blown away (despite it being on the paperwork in her hand and being confirmed over the phone) and told me I needed to see the vet because she is such an elderly dog. I understood that but I should have been informed well before this point, along with the extra charge now. I waited until just after 10 to see the vet, now at 2.5hrs waiting time to drop off my dog for her spey. Vet was lovely and very helpful, she said it would now cost $423 plus consultation fee, I was a bit thrown back from the original $160 that I was told. We discussed risks and agreed that some extra mesures were necessary to keep her safe with her age, I declined the blood work which took it down to $240 (take home pain relief and extra fluids were added to the original $160)plus consultation fee. Great let's do this! I'm told to come back at 4 or they'll txt me if they are done earlier, cool see you then. I don't hear from them so turn up at 4pm, they let me know that she's not quite ready but I can pay now and she will be ready in about 20mins, ok no problems and I go to pay, $390.... I said nope check her notes I was quoted 240plus consultation fee, the girls looked at me like I was speaking a completely alien language and said yeah you got fluids and pain relief, I said yes I know that, that is what was written in her notes. They tell me they will speak to the vet and let me know what she says, awesome thank you. 4.40 rolls around and the girls are standing in the back yarning away, so I check in and ask if they have talked to the vet, they had but didn't bother to tell me. The vet had made a mistake and it was $287, sweet paid and was told she wasnt quite awake yet because she had only just been finished... Sat back down and waited until 5.30pm when she was finally brought out to me, barely walking (I'm pretty sure she had only just gone into surgery when I arrived at 4pm, she was still VERY sleepy when she was brought out to us at 5.30pm) YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!! Lesson learned.
Negative experience: Tried calling twice but the recorded voice-mail was on with an old message. Sorry we're closed.but it was after 8.00 am in the morning. Great South Vets needs to change the system and hours of business plus the days. Notice board outside door misinformed clients. This place only open 5 days a week. No online booking and only one phone line.
Negative experience: The service in this Vet is appalling!!! They dont answer their phones! My cat is there overnight and they simply donot answer their phones! The 2 Indian nurses/receptionists are there to do a service with absolutely no compassion, makes me wonder if they’re there for the money only! They just hand out meds and don’t explain to people how to administer them. All they do is hand out ticket numbers, take payments then sit there but don’t answer their phones! Previous nurses were very accommodating and compassionate towards customers. They won’t even redirect a person to an alternate Vet/Clinic! Not even a bloody smile on their faces!!! REVISIT YOUR FRONT OFFICE STAFF!!!
Positive experience: There great if you want cheap, they do get very busy so first in first served so there can be a long wait, bring snacks for you & your pet ...if you want compassion probably not the best vet to go to
Positive experience: It's alright. The vets are awesome, dynamic and no fuss, but the set up is 'no appointment needed' and a waitlist. I waited 3+ hrs on a Thursday and worked in my car. Be prepared for extremely long wait times. If you have something to pass the time, it's no matter. My dog is well now though haha.
Negative experience: This vet is the most appalling one I've ever encountered. Due to Dr. Santina‘s negligence, my dog got injured in the lab, and after coming out, it had swollen eyes, a painful neck, and couldn't stand. When I asked her what happened, she claimed my dog had self-inflicted injuries by hitting walls in the lab, due to short of staff no one can help her to look after my dog and shifting the blame onto my dog. The clinic owner even told me to seek care elsewhere, insisting that my pet's injuries had nothing to do with them.after that I rushed my dog to the emergency to see specialist immediately, but even after three days of painkillers, it couldn't be helped. Sadly, I had to put him to sleep. To this day, the doctor and the clinic have provided no explanation or apology. I cannot come to terms with this reality.
Positive experience: Cheapest by far, good service, thankfully the have an online ticket system which let's you know when your next, it compensates for the lengthy waiting times. We're being hit with Vet shortages like the Doctor shortages, so patience and understanding needed!
Negative experience: preface: the surgeon did call/text and apologize, but i need to write a review and caution owners to do their research. you get what you pay for. it's cheaper than other places, but it's still pricey if you're getting surgery done. there is a reason why they are affordable. they are very short-staffed, so the wait times are long for a quick consult and even getting there early, you might be waiting 2/3 hours. check your pets when they are discharged from any surgery (dental, desex, etc.) before leaving. i won't go into detail, but my dog had to go to an after hours vet and it was a stressful time. this might have been avoided if we had checked our dog - this shouldn't have to happen, but sadly, that's the only way to be safe when staff are trying to get their pets out to their owners while juggling short staff. do your research. everyone's situation is different, but take the reviews to heart. just be prepared to wait a long time. they also charged us double for an item, which they did refund after a complaint. edit: there seems to be a pattern of neglect in caring for pets after surgery, which is alarming.
Negative experience: Not a good experience, no appointments given, just a number in the queue, waiting for two hours to be seen, then didn't hear number called while waiting in a back room. Receptionist did not advise me. Back room not very clean blocked sink! Parking difficult, not much space, person behind me jumped the queue and stopped in the middle blocking other cars. Cars driving all over neighbours green verges, shuffling for a space. This was a very stressful experience for myself and most importantly, big stress for the dog waiting so long.
Negative experience: So sad our beautiful dog had to be put down and was in so much pain and was told we needed to come back next day - no compassion! Went to another vet who helped us and couldn't believe this vet would send someone away.. my partner was literally distraught and in tears. Absolutely disgusting
Negative experience: Took my dog into get her vaccinations up to date. I was waiting there for almost 4 hours!!! The last time I came to this vet, the receptionist used to come outside and call out the number. If it was your number, it's now your turn. But that's not what happens now and you're not even told that. I received my ticket with my number but I didn't read any of the fine print on the ticket. I assumed like last time that the receptionist comes out and calls the numbers. About an hour later I wondered why customers kept going inside to look at the wall. Turns out there's a TV that shows the numbers of who's turn it is next. I also found out from another customer that you can go to their website which tells you what number is up next. So I kept an eye on that. After about 3.5 hours, a customer that arrived after me went in for their turn. When I asked the receptionist what's the story she said you were called at 11.05am - 6 mins after I arrived - but you didn't come in. I said I thought you came out to call the numbers, it wasn't till much later I found out from the customers that this is not the case. Surely you can tell customers what the process is. Maaan the look she gave me, as if that's not her job. Long story short I had been there 3.5 hours before questioning the receptionist, almost 4 hours in total by the time my dog got her vaccinations. The nurses are great at their job, very skilled, but the overall process is such rubbish and the receptionist needs to be replaced. She's not interested in being there at all.
Fantastic experience: Dr Hing is a very caring and professional vet. He operated on my little dog's paw and did a great job. She has recovered now. Thank you Dr Hing. Cost was also affordable which was very much appreciated. Thank you so much.
Negative experience: Yeah not going back here again. My cat had a sore paw so left work to take her in. Got there about 2pm. One vet & no more times available. Large sign outside says 7 days, but No, it's no longer 7 days so can't come back on Saturday. Can you recommend another vet nearby? No, just look it up on google. Found a great vet nearby though.
Negative experience: Not happy waiting for hours on end. It should be mentioned when you arrive that there is only one vet on and a list of people waiting plus all the urgent shows in the carpark adding a longer wait time. Before I walked out after 1.5 hrs with still 4 people in front of me another lady said she was still waiting after 4 hours. Im out finding some place else. They have just lost another customer.
Fantastic experience: Went in for my pups vaccination. Over all great experience. Dr. Santina was wonderful and thorough in her assessment. Was quick and also much affordable. Note for new patients: They don't have appointments but they HAVE A token system, and it may take a while for your number to come up. 10/10 Would recommend to others.
Fantastic experience: I’m hoping to come back to this vet clinic if I can - Dr Hing I believe it was carried out life saving abdominal surgery on my little dog whom I had adopted unaware of her poor health she was very near death and I was given no guarantees but with careful nursing for a couple of days she pulled through, and is well to this day. price too less than $1000 which was amazing.
Fantastic experience: I was a-bit hesitant at first having my dog spayed from reading the reviews, there are some good and bad ones so I thought I’d take it upon myself and try them out as the price was reasonable. I’m pleased with my experience I had with GSV the communication was really good and they let me stay with my dog after giving her a numbing shot, also the ladies at the reception were so nice and welcoming, they gave my dog a bath trimmed her coat and clipped her nails with out charging me walked out with one drowsy dog & a happy customer
Positive experience: Took one of my cats in for his annual booster flu vacine. Cost $29 as apposed to $85 at my local vet. Was worth the effort of getting up early and waiting for them to open. Only one vet on (as others doing surgery), but a Nurse administered the vacine, so only had a 40min wait Car park was full at 7.30am, so had to park in a side street, as bus lane on one side from 7- 9am and 10min parking on other side of Great South Road.
Negative experience: Stay away from these guys!! Not too happy with this Vet. I’ve only found out they did not de-sex my cat a year ago. They had said they couldn’t find one of his cat balls and they had taken one out. He came out dazed, shaved and stitched on one side. They recommended getting him done at a later stage as he will still spray. They gave his neuter certificate, I paid and left it at that. However recently I had my cat back in another vet to get him neutered properly. They wouldn’t neuter him unless they knew what happened with his first surgery. We sent what we had to the current vet and they did the enquiries. Turns out our cat hadn’t been neutered at all and we’re still unsure why he’d been stitched if he hadn’t been neutered .
Fantastic experience: They saved our little boy whom was almost dying. He had PU surgery and healed well. Big thanks to them, especially Santina.
Negative experience: Very dirty and strong bad odor. I get that animals have their own odor but over there is a bit over the top. I sat there today looking around and thought, I’d clean & sanitise this whole place in a day and at least make it look decent. I couldn’t let any of them touch my fur baby so I left. Never going back there again.
Negative experience: This had also been our vet for many years since both dogs were puppies due to their cheap prices, especially for dental. And the wait would usually have been around 1 hour. Fast forward to my most recent experience. $800 in blood/other tests to be told my dog has Cushing’s disease (with no further explanation or follow up, just to come get some meds and will need to do another blood test after 3-4 weeks (first round of $400 tests said she had something liver related so recommended special blood test for Cushing’s - another $400). First appointment was 4 hours wait to be seen (after being told it was around 2 hour wait). Second appointment was scheduled. The appointment where I had to wait 4 hours, there was only one vet on that day hence the wait time. When I finally got my appointment I felt that I had to rush through what I wanted to ask and it was a bit rushed, although the vet was thorough in asking everything, we were just talking very quickly and it felt like I needed to get in and out quickly so other people could be seen. A few days after the second blood test I got a text (from no reply number) from the vet saying Beema has Cushing’s. No explanation or call- I had to google what this disease is. The text said to pickup the medication on Monday (the text was sent on Friday afternoon prior). I planned to go to pickup the medication at lunchtime on Monday. I get a text (from the no reply number) saying they are sorry, they have just sold Beema’s medication to someone else and will let me know when it’s back in stock. I try to call straight away- no pickup. I email to ask if I can get the medication somewhere else and also if Beema (and my other dog Mischa who I have to pickup from Waiheke) can come for their teeth clean on Thursday (this week/tomorrow!!) as I am not sure if Beema can go under general anaesthetic as she has Cushing’s disease?! As I have not heard from any vet what this all even means. Just that I had to get medication (which has now been sold) then do another blood test (another $400) in 3-4 weeks time to see if the dose needs to be adjusted. I called several times on Monday and Tuesday but no pickup. I emailed two more times asking re dental appointment. The final email I said I would just bring them in and see at the time if Beema could do the dental or not. But now thinking it all over and reading some of these outrageous reviews of patients dying on the table with no excuse I am cancelling my appointment for the dental and moving my dogs away from this vet. I have been coming here for many years since both the dogs were puppies. But it has gotten much worse and honestly the prices do not seem much cheaper at $400 per blood test. I am sure the dental is still cheaper here but I will just have to pay more for the peace of mind that my fur babies will be safe. The place has gotten very run down, the toilet has the sink held on by super glue but the glue has come off and so the sink is hanging off the wall. It is also very dirty and unhygienic. My dad always says you can tell a lot about an establishment by their toilets. For all the patients they get I feel they could surely invest some money back into their clinic. I understand they have very limited staff here and they are doing their best but with this low quality of clinic and hygiene I do not know how they would be attracting new vets as the vets would surely want to work in a place which is more hygienic and clean like other vet clinics, compared to this one. It is unfortunate I will move my dogs away from here but I do feel this place needs investment in its clinic space and its staff going forward.
Negative experience: This has been our family’s go to vet for years but after covid I am finding it very difficult to get an appointment. They’ve switched to a method that does not allow pre-booking. So you go all the way there, wait in line, only to be told that they’re already overbooked for the rest of the day at 2pm in the afternoon. I appreciate that their prices are very cheap but unless you have an entire day to spend waiting in line, the low costs don’t make up for the time and energy wasted.
Negative experience: Still in shock. The miscalculation of the bill is not the point, on the bill for our cat vaccinations there was a collar that another customer bought for her dog. The terrible thing is that they gave wrong medication, twice!!! We discovered it in time for the second time, so it was changed immediately. But also the same time found that last time they gave the wrong medicine for treatment. We were given 250mg tablets instead of 50mg tablets which should we have, a full five times the dose!!! At this time, my kitten has been taking the medicine for two weeks! She was only 8 weeks old when she started taking the medicine, and her weight was less than 1kg. The staff kept apologizing, saying it was harmless, do you believe it? If it is harmless why we need the prescribed dose? We all know that antibiotics must not be taken in excess, otherwise it will cause lesions in the body and cause toxic reactions, which can affect the nervous system, urinary system, blood and digestive system or liver and kidneys. You are professionals with more knowledge than ordinary people, how can you lie to customers like this? We are so upset and don't know what to do, maybe irreversible damage has been done to the cat.
Fantastic experience: Good to get in early or during dull hours or the wait is long. The vets and staff were very helpful and got everything I needed for my cat for a affordable price. Highly recommend them
Positive experience: I choose to have my cats spayed and microchipped here due to the reasonable pricing. I don't live in the area but most vets near me charge 5-6x what this place does, so I decided to give them a go having found them online. I observed during my visits the extremely limited parking situation, and the long wait queues that everyone talks about, and also wish something could be done about this, however I also appreciate that there needs to be a balance. This place offers extraordinarily affordable pricing and as a result is clearly very popular and busy compared to possibly other vets, so I guess they're doing the best that they can considering the resources they have available. I should add that in my specific experience I had my cats booked in for their surgery prior so the wait time was not that bad (just had to get through the initial queue at the door) although I also acknowledge others had to wait hours to be seen without an appointment. Overall I am happy with the service and without them I would have likely not spayed the cats given the stupid pricing other places charge, so kudos for doing what you can to allow pet owners to care for their pets without breaking the bank! It was a fairly in-and-out arrangement with clearly a good surgical outcome. The incisions are healing extremely well and the cats full of energy as if nothing had happened. The paperwork and information provided post-surgery was also informative and helpful. The only gripe for me would be the shaving method of the fur - I felt that a third of my cats overall fur was shaved unnecessarily for such a small incision. I appreciate the hair will grow back, but feel this was unnecessary. Perhaps a bit more time and care can be given to identify the site of the incision to only shave back what is necessary rather than leave the cats looking janky afterwards. Nevertheless, a good experience, I will definitely use them again in the future given the opportunity and do recommend them. Just note to book an appointment for any procedures, and if you're just walking in for a checkup, make sure you put plenty of time aside as you could be waiting for hours to be seen, understandably. Thanks team!
Negative experience: Worst vet clinic. Didn’t have the option to leave online reviews back in 2015 but took my dog in to get surgery. Instead I get a phone call to say he died on the operating table. Turns out they didn’t take his muzzle off before putting him in the cage so he died of dehydration. We ended up settling but wow the incompetence and neglect. Poor dog, I can’t imagine what his last moments were, and we were so upset that we had left our sick dog with them. They knew they were in the wrong and admitted it was a mistake. After reading some stories on the Grapevine on Facebook, it has prompted me to leave this review so people are aware that these issues can happen.
Negative experience: Parking here is just stupid! Waiting time is just as bad. Waited 4 & half hours just for my 2 pups to be microchipped & for a consultation to be in the room less than 10mins to pay almost $140?! Thats just outrageous!! Prices maybe cheap, but the time spent waiting around for a number to be called it just aint worth it. Been trying too call for past 20mins & have had no answer! Shocking really!
Positive experience: One of the cheaper vets around, but, long waits as its take a number when the doors open at 730am. At 730 the line is around the waiting room and out the door to the road sometimes. Once you have your number you can go to a web page that tells you what number they are up to, so can go away for a while but don't miss your spot or go bottom of list again. They are doing the best they can, but clearly understaffed. Happy with the work we had done, but unless you've got a few hours to spare in your day it might not be for everyone.
Fantastic experience: Yes we had to arrive super early to get a slot, but worth it to get our sick boy better and the cost was extremely reasonable. Thank you team, Keep up the hard Mahi, it's appreciated.
Fantastic experience: I have brought my cat in twice, once was for neutering and the second time was for her paw that needed attention to. Both times I received great service and my cat left better off at a good price. Would highly recommend!
Negative experience: Just to add a review on behalf of my friend….If you want your beloved pet to be put down unintentionally, you come to the right place! This filthy place is a butcher house!!!! I will never ever bring my pets here, my friend’s pet died when she got home after a broken nail minor operation on her dog!!!
