Fantastic experience: Dr Ian and his team are the best cat vets in Christchurch, hands down. My experience with Dr Ian has been nothing but pleasant, even in heartbreakingly difficult times; he is not only a good doctor but an amazing human being. A month into adopting my senior cat Preston, he needed a hernia repair surgery, and Dr Ian and his team saved his life and gave me an extra year with him. Sadly, he passed a week ago. I brought Preston in to see Dr Ian, and he was patient with us and gave us the time to say goodbye, even though it was late at night. And I knew Preston was in good hands when we left him with the team. Now, a week later, Preston sent a lovely rescue into my life, and I'm sure Mr Snuggles and The Cat Vet will get along just fine. Honestly, you won't find a better vet for your furbabies.

Fantastic experience: I went thinking my old cat was on its last legs. The vet was so kind and caring, he listened to me and watched her before examining her. He needed more info, expecting the usual quote of around $300 for tests, instead a simple blood test cost only $100 and I came home not so broke, with my cat, and some more time to spend with her. Thank you, you're a gem.

Fantastic experience: Big Thank you to all the staff at the Cat Vet, Ian, Laura, Emma and Charlotte and all the lovely staff, they are the most friendly and kind staff ever. An accident happened while my cat was chasing a fly, I had to bring him in and had one of his K9 teeth removed. The whole procedure was excellent, my cat was well taken care of and they kept me updated with everything. Definitely recommend the Cat Vet to everyone who needs a good vet service.

Negative experience: Our experience with the clinic was deeply disappointing. The cat, our boy Rascal deserves better. He was extremely stressed, yet we were not allowed to stay with him—even while staff remained in the same room. On the morning he was clearly deteriorating, we were still asked to leave. This was heartbreaking and hard to understand. We found Rascal eating wood pellets( a type of cat litter) and obviously starving, but were told he “was not hungry” and were stopped from feeding him his favourite fresh pasteurized meat we brought. Watching a critically ill cat be denied basic comfort was incredibly painful. His red blood cell count kept falling, yet we received no clear diagnosis, no explanation of the anemia type, and no treatment. Being told there were “no medicines for anemia”. Blood transfusion. We really needed a blood transfusions to buy some time for the further diagnosis and medicine treatments on Thursday. We called the clinic several times. You told us that the cats blood type is really complicated and it’s difficult to get donors. You can contact blood banks but it will take 4-5 days to get. You told us the cats blood type is really complicated. But there’re only 3 types which is A, B and AB. Later, we learned that the New Zealand companion Animal Blood Bank can fly emergency supplies within hours in Christchurch, and we also had another healthy cat available as a potential donor. After Rascal passed away, we received a call suggesting that treatment options were limited because our initial payment was only $1000. Yet on Thursday, we were told the $1000 was merely a deposit covering Wednesday through Thursday, and that additional fees of $2000–$3000 could be charged for Friday’s care. On Friday morning, when Rascal was clearly dying in your clinic, the clinic did not charge additional costs and asked us to take him home to spend his final hours with us. To later imply that financial limitations prevented treatment feels inconsistent and distressing—especially since basic medications for anemia could have been administered. We left with the heavy feeling that critical opportunities were missed. Rascal deserved better, and we will carry that with us for a long time.

He literally brought our cat back to life after a traumatic experience elsewhere! He is so gentle with cats and you can tell that he really cares about them! He has extensive experience both internationally and in NZ and knows everything about cats, the latest treatments and medications out there. He also knows all about FDA black boxed drugs (being Canadian) which makes us feel comfortable when discussing the treatment options for our cat and in the end his treatment is always spot on and we know that our cat is in good hands. Dr. Ian is the only vet that we trust 100%. Thank you!

Our rag doll cat, Gus has had some bladder issues recently, which has meant a few visits and follow up calls. Dr Ian has been extremely knowledgable, calm and always patient and understanding with our questions. All of the staff are welcoming and compassionate and clearly dedicated to the wellbeing of their patients. Fantastic experience: I saw a baby bird alive on the ground and two others dead near by. The mother was not around, I didn't know what to do so I went to there office to ask them advice. Even though they were about to close, the veterinarian told me to bring the baby bird to him and that he will take of it. I m extremely gratefully for what he did, thanks sir!

Fantastic experience: I recommend The Cat Vet to all my cat-owning friends. When our cats are sick we can ring and get an appointment quickly - none of the 'the earliest we can see him is 3 days from now' that we had with the previous vet. Their fees seem to be lower than we paid before, and they definitely know cats! It's little things like the hormone spray in the consulting room that helps the cats feel secure, and the blanket on the consulting table for comfort. It's the thorough 20-30 minute examination of each new cat compared to the 2-3 minute one I've seen from other vets. I know my cats are in good hands and it's great to know that they'll never meet a dog in the waiting room! Update: My beloved puss of almost 15 years developed blood cancer. We fought, but the cancer won. Ian and Delwyn pulled strings around the city to get her the best care possible. At the end, her passing was more peaceful and loving than I ever imagined possible -- such a contrast with the passing of previous cats. But that's not all. Today I brought in my new kitten for her first shots. Every vet and vet nurse in the practice came out to say hello to the baby, and to honour the memory of the older cat. They see dozens of cute cats a day but are still interested in fussing over a 9-week old kitten. They also showed interest in how the other cats in our household have coped with the loss of Top Cat and the arrival of the new kitten. This is a team who truly care about both their feline and their human clients. We're not just client numbers on a spreadsheet but unique individuals treated as such. They're who I want to care for me and my cats.

Fantastic experience: The Cat Vet went above and beyond to save my daughter's cat when my ignorance put his life at risk (LILIES CAN KILL, spread the word). They even obliged my request to brush his chest when sedated, while also tending to a knot on his back that I have been struggling with, that I didn't ask them to do. They kept me updated throughout, trying different sedatives and smelly food tricks to make him expel the toxins. When that didn't work, and as there is no antidote to lilies, they advised that the next step was to inject fluids, keep him overnight for observation and then test his bloods for damage 24 hours later to see where to go from there - while under sedation, yet again. All of this for not much more than it cost me at another vet for a skin scratch test and medicated shampoo when my puppy suffered from dandruff. They were impeccable with their updates and there's no doubt that they genuinely care... They genuinely care . My daughter will now have a healthy kitten when she comes back from holiday, no thanks to me but all thanks to the team. Thank you.

Fantastic experience: I can’t recommend them enough! I had a really hard year with one of my cats going to the vets at least a couple times a month. When I changed to the cat vet they were so kind and understanding I couldn’t believe it. Every staff member goes above and beyond to make sure you understand what’s going and help you to make informed decisions about next steps. Im especially grateful for Emma! She’s always so kind and compassionate ❤️

The staff are amazing and actually care about your cat, unlike other vets. They are extremely knowledgeable and very forward with information. Positive experience: I booked for a nail clip only, with a nurse and was charged $55. When the receipt came through, it stated - nurse consultation - $35 and nail clip - $20. I never asked for the consultation and believe that your clients should be made aware of this beforehand so they know what they are paying for.

I’ve had to call several times for emergencies, both during and after hours, and I’ve always had a quick, empathetic response, and have been guided through whatever needs to be done. Could not recommend more highly!

Negative experience: Delwyn treated my cat for about a year. At one stage, she was meant to call me about a procedure for him and didn't get back to me for over 5 weeks. When I did finally talk to her, she was angry with me for trying to get in touch with her. She then said I had fallen off her to do list then she started crying and then said "I can't talk about it now, I'll fill you in when I see you." All I had wanted was for her to contact me about the procedure as she had promised. Her behaviour was very unprofessional. I tried to contact Ian Ross several times to talk about it as perhaps Delwyn was under stress. Neither Ian nor Delwyn contacted me to to apologise or discuss her behaviour so I moved vets. Consistently professional behaviour at my new vet. Worrying and incompetent behaviour from Delwyn and Ian. Very strange experience.

Fantastic experience: Update: We used this vet for the entire 7 years that we lived in Christchurch and they've been wonderful the entire time, except for the very last visit: We had a "new" vet (one we hadn't seen before) that rattled off a huge list and timeline of "necessary" blood tests and dental work without taking the time to explain why so much had seemingly changed since her last clean bill of health the year before - maybe she had looked at a different cat's file? Since we were leaving Christchurch soon, I didn't follow-up. Otherwise, I would have tried to sort it out. I still recommend them. Old review: We've been here twice now - once for an illness and I've for a regular check up. The staff have always been super friendly and accommodating, and we've never felt rushed, pressured into anything, or overcharged. Highly recommended!!

I have a ragdoll kitten, and after reading the reviews and literally scrolling through all the content on the website, I decided to take Blue in for her first appointment. The entire team and nurses are competent and friendly. Blue loves them. They gave me some advice over the phone about some problems and experiences I had with Blue, and that made me very relieved. Fantastic experience: Ian is amazing. We moved our cat to this vet after suffering issues for a long time with her bowels that no one could help us with. I was considering flying her to wellington to a cat specialist but saw the reviews at this vet and decided to give it a try and it was the best move we've made for her, no more issues with her bowels. I can't recommend Ian and the team enough even down to how they handle cats when they come in.

Fantastic experience: My sister-in-law recommended this vet to us and I can see why. The vet was very calm and skilful at handling our cat who normally hates going to the vet. The vet was methodical and very skilled and explained things well as the consultation went on. I would highly recommend this vet to cat owners.

Negative experience: Still baffled by my experience with these guys but had a really negative experience once trying to book through their reception staff who were so unhelpful and wouldn't let me book an evening as they were 'reserved for people who really needed them', despite the fact that I indeed work until 5pm and couldn't get in earlier. The owner, Ian, has refused to let me book at this practice and made me feel like a villain! Lots of friends and family go here so I've no clue why I've been treated this way. Would have loved to attend this vet practice and can't understand why there are so many positive reviews when my experience has been just a bad one. Very confused and feeling discriminated against.

Fantastic experience: Kumara our ginger tabby became unwell wednesday as kumara is registerd with the cat vet, we were able to get him seen that eveing Dr Ian Ross noted that kumara had a blocked bladder and commenced immediate intervention luckly he caught it early and kumara made a full recovery..many thanks to the team at the cat vet.. kumara specially!!!
